The novel is my artistic space. Of late, I am working from the surrealistic paintings of Nicola Verlato in order to shape key scenes in my novel. This is a 360 degree turn from my past three Appalachian manuscripts. I am so attracted to surrealism because it is a powerful vehicle for the subconscious and an amulet against the absurd. The novel is exciting to me, not only because of its ability for creating multidimensional worlds that fit into a small package, but because it is so difficult to master. Form is elusive, and once you have captured it, it sometimes erases much of the work that came before it in subsequent drafts. I am relying on Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s quote regarding magical realism to encourage me: “It is possible to get away with anything as long as you make it believable.”
