All my life I have been a maker of objects—wood and metal. Now these days are more commonly of clay. I am interested in ceramics long history and its relationship with food, particularly fermented foods, and turning crockery and storage vessels. Covered vessels make us curious as to what is contained within. I am always engaged in the next layer beneath where I am currently working, including making and glazing a pot, formulating the clay and glaze, digging raw materials, and building the kiln. My goal is to achieve what Shoji Hamada writes: “Technique and skill must be absorbed, wrapped up and put away to become such an integral part of yourself that they will be revealed in your work without your thought.”
